Kottayam: The city with the goodies
When in Kottayam, you are inside a fort with all the goodies and no one can take you away from it. Kottayam in Malayalam literally means inside a fort. Indeed, Kottayam has everything that Kerala has to offer: from spending backwaters, to bird sanctuaries, temples, churches and above all beautiful landscapes. The city is well-known for its backwater cruises and has a number of small and big ghats, where boats of every kind are available.
Within virtually hand-shaking distance from Kottayam is Kumarakom. The backwater destination has a bird sanctuary and the island of Pathiramal. Ideal for honeymooning couples, there is no reason why others cannot visit it too.
Around Kottayam, there are a number of places to visit like the Vaikom Temple, 40 km away from the city. The Shiva Temple believed to be associated with the legendary Parasurama, is an excellent example of the Kerala style of architecture. A must visit destination is Vagamon, 60 km from Kottayam, and a trekkers paradise. The
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is also accessible from the city. That is the place to see elephants in their natural habitat, spotted deer, wild pigs, bisons and even tigers and leopards.
